{"id":1156,"date":"2026-08-15T16:06:01","date_gmt":"2026-08-15T16:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/andreastonelle.com\/?p=1156"},"modified":"2026-08-30T11:48:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-30T16:48:32","slug":"fours-hours-unscripted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foxdigital.design\/andreastonelle\/journal-blog\/fours-hours-unscripted\/","title":{"rendered":"Fours Hours, Unscripted"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_medium\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>An ode to lingering longer, letting chemistry unfold, and the luxury of having nowhere else to be.<\/p>\n<p>There is something terribly romantic about having nowhere else to be.<\/p>\n<p>No rushing through dinner.<\/p>\n<p>No discreet glances at the clock.<\/p>\n<p>No feeling that we need to hurry toward the next part of the evening simply because time is passing.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few uninterrupted hours and the delicious possibility of seeing where they take us.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that\u2019s why the four-hour date has quietly become my favorite.<\/p>\n<p>Not because more time automatically creates more connection.<\/p>\n<p>But because connection behaves differently when it isn\u2019t being rushed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Art of Arriving<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think there are two ways we arrive somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>First, our bodies arrive.<\/p>\n<p>Then, eventually, the rest of us catches up.<\/p>\n<p>We bring work with us. Traffic. Flights. Meetings. Responsibilities. The conversation we had an hour earlier. The thing we\u2019re supposed to remember tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Even excitement can make us a little nervous.<\/p>\n<p>I understand that.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve never felt the need to force someone immediately into relaxation, romance, or chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>Give it a minute.<\/p>\n<p>Have a drink.<\/p>\n<p>Tell me about your day.<\/p>\n<p>Let me make you laugh.<\/p>\n<p>There is a beautiful point in an evening when someone\u2019s posture changes almost imperceptibly and I can tell:<\/p>\n<p>There you are.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve arrived.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chemistry Prefers a Little Breathing Room<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chemistry is wonderfully inconvenient because it refuses to follow instructions.<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t schedule it for 7:15.<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t demand that two people instantly feel familiar.<\/p>\n<p>And you certainly can\u2019t manufacture it.<\/p>\n<p>But you can give it somewhere to land.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it\u2019s discovered through conversation. Sometimes humor. Sometimes a shared curiosity neither person expected.<\/p>\n<p>And sometimes it\u2019s simply the realization that you feel remarkably comfortable sitting beside someone you barely knew a few hours earlier.<\/p>\n<p>That transition fascinates me.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s why I prefer possibility over itinerary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s Have Dinner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite things about a longer date is that there is room for something wonderfully ordinary:<\/p>\n<p>Sharing a meal.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps we find a beautiful little restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps we dress for the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>There are cocktails and candlelight, something delicious in the middle of the table, and hopefully a dessert neither of us technically needed.<\/p>\n<p>And then conversation begins wandering.<\/p>\n<p>This is where I thrive.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m naturally curious. I want to know what you\u2019re fascinated by\u2014not simply what you do.<\/p>\n<p>Tell me about the trip you still think about.<\/p>\n<p>The book that changed your mind.<\/p>\n<p>Your strangest theory.<\/p>\n<p>Something you\u2019re ridiculously passionate about.<\/p>\n<p>Something you\u2019ve never quite figured out.<\/p>\n<p>I love when conversation takes a completely unexpected turn and suddenly we\u2019re discussing art, psychology, travel, spirituality, childhood, or something neither of us could have predicted when we sat down.<\/p>\n<p>That wandering is part of intimacy too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anticipation Deserves Its Moment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We live in a culture that moves very quickly toward conclusions.<\/p>\n<p>I prefer the middle.<\/p>\n<p>The glance across the table.<\/p>\n<p>The subtle flirtation.<\/p>\n<p>The hand at the small of the back as we walk somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>That delicious awareness that the evening is changing without either person needing to announce it.<\/p>\n<p>Anticipation isn\u2019t an obstacle to pleasure.<\/p>\n<p>Anticipation is part of the pleasure.<\/p>\n<p>And when there is plenty of time ahead of us, we don\u2019t have to hurry past it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eventually, the Red Lipstick Comes Off<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This might be my favorite part of a longer evening.<\/p>\n<p>Not literally the lipstick\u2014although, realistically, probably that too.<\/p>\n<p>I mean the point when presentation gives way to personality.<\/p>\n<p>The beautiful dress is still there, but perhaps the heels have been abandoned somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>The conversation becomes less polished.<\/p>\n<p>We laugh louder.<\/p>\n<p>An inside joke has somehow developed.<\/p>\n<p>And you begin meeting the woman behind the red lipstick.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s affectionate.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s curious.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s occasionally ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s probably asking you another question because something you said twenty minutes ago made her think of something else.<\/p>\n<p>She likes beautiful things but doesn\u2019t need everything to remain perfectly composed.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, I think some of the best moments happen when we stop trying to be impressive altogether.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The New Definition of Luxury<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Luxury is usually sold to us as something tangible.<\/p>\n<p>The hotel.<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>The champagne.<\/p>\n<p>The dress.<\/p>\n<p>And I certainly have an appreciation for beautiful things.<\/p>\n<p>But adulthood has taught me that one of our rarest luxuries isn\u2019t something you can hold.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s uninterrupted attention.<\/p>\n<p>Four hours where nobody needs anything from us.<\/p>\n<p>Where the phone can disappear.<\/p>\n<p>Where dinner can take too long.<\/p>\n<p>Where conversation can wander.<\/p>\n<p>Where silence doesn\u2019t need fixing.<\/p>\n<p>Where affection doesn\u2019t need an agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Where we can simply be curious about another human being.<\/p>\n<p>That feels extraordinarily indulgent to me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Date Should Have Chapters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that\u2019s what I love most about four hours.<\/p>\n<p>There is enough time for an evening to have a beginning, a middle, and an ending.<\/p>\n<p>The anticipation.<\/p>\n<p>The arrival.<\/p>\n<p>The conversation.<\/p>\n<p>The laughter.<\/p>\n<p>The flirtation.<\/p>\n<p>The moment everything softens.<\/p>\n<p>The part nobody planned.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, that peculiar feeling when you realize several hours have disappeared much faster than they had any right to.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what I\u2019m after.<\/p>\n<p>Not filling four hours.<\/p>\n<p>Losing them.<\/p>\n<p>Because my favorite dates aren\u2019t measured by how much we managed to fit into the evening.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re measured by something much simpler:<\/p>\n<p>How little either of us noticed the clock.<\/p>\n<p>Deeply Yours,<\/p>\n<p><em>Andrea<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nowhere else to be.
